- Summary:
- In 1923, Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamon's fabulous tomb ; within a short time thereafter, 22 of his colleagues died, mystifying the scientific-minded and leading the more credulous to accept as a curse the inscription found in one of the antechambers of the tomb : "The wings of death shall smite him who disturbs the peace of the Pharaoh." This program looks at research that determined the cause of death : bacteria from the decomposing fruits and vegetables placed in the tomb to feed King Tut in the next world--bacteria which had survived without oxygen and which infected and killed the archaeologists.
