This year marks the hundredth anniversary of Nietzsche's death. As a philosopher, he is of such great importance to theology and to the church because among atheists he is the one who in spite of his deliberate and agressively advocated godlessness was never able to get away from the question of God. His patterns of thought are governed to a large extent by theological patterns of thought, and it is this which makes it particular fascinating to approach him from the standpoint of theology and the church. We are living in an era in which the church is increasingly losing its plausibility, and in times such as this no one should disregard Nietzsche. German description: Als philosophischer Denker ist Friedrich Nietzsche fur Theologie und Kirche von so grosser Bedeutung, weil er derjenige unter den Atheisten ist, der gerade in seiner so bewusst und aggressiv vertretenen Gottlosigkeit nie von der Gottesfrage losgekommen ist. Sein Atheismus ist ein erlittener Atheismus und als solcher ein besonders ehrlicher Atheismus. Nietzsche wusste von der Horizontlosigkeit des Gottlosen. Trotz aller Polemik gegenuber dem Christentum durfte er derjenige Atheist sein, mit dem sich die Auseinandersetzung am meisten lohnt. Er hat die Gottlosigkeit am tiefsten durchdacht und auch dementsprechenden Einfluss gehabt. Seine Denkstrukturen sind zutiefst von theologischen Denkstrukturen beherrscht; gerade darin liegt der besondere Reiz, sich ihm von seiten der Theologie und der Kirche zu nahern. Niemand sollte in der heutigen Zeit, in der die kirchliche Verkundigung zunehmend an Plausibilitat verliert, Nietzsche ausser acht lassen.
