Notes:
Henri Lasserre's version of the gospels in modern literary French was first published in 1886, the imprimatur of the archbishop of Paris being dated the 11th of November of that year.
Issued with full ecclesiastical sanction, and receiving the early approbation of the Holy See, it achieved an immediate and extraordinary sucess, no fewer than 100,000 copies being sold in a year. But suddenly the book was placed on the Index, 19 Dec. 1887, and thereupon withdrawn from circulation by its author, who mad vain efforts to secure a reversal of this judgment.
Preliminary matter includes, La pensée de Rome sur la traduction des Saints Évangiles, signed by Cardinal Jacobini; dedication "À Notre-Dame de Lourdes;" and Préface, dated 1872-86. Text in paragraphs, with notes at the foot of the page p. 531-590 contain Notes explicatives et lexicologiques; p. 591-600 Table des matières.
