Summary:
Affirmative action originated as a plan to correct the historical disadvantage of women and people of color -- to make the system more fair. For over twenty years, it has been repeatedly attacked for being unfair to whites, and even un-American.
Guinier and Sturm critique affirmative action as too modest a remedy, arguing that it doesn't go far enough -- either for the people it includes or the people it leaves out. They expose the failure of tests to predict success, and ask us to rethink how we evaluate qualification for everyone, not just the beneficiaries of affirmative action. Offering a model of selection based on performance, not prediction, the authors' vision of an old ideal is at once a smart business practice and a step toward the promise of democratic opportunity. A lively debate including Claude M. Steele. Howard Gardner, Derrick Bell, and Peter Sacks ensues.
