- Summary:
- Memoirs of a Jew born in 1926 in Paris to a family of Polish immigrants. In 1941 Michlin's father was sent to work near Bordeaux. He was arrested by the SS, transferred to a French internment camp, and from there to the Ardennes, where he worked until January 1944 when he was deported to Auschwitz and killed. In February 1944 Michlin and his mother were arrested in Paris and deported to Auschwitz, where his mother was gassed on arrival. Michlin worked at the Siemens factory in Birkenau until January 1945, when the camp was evacuated and he was sent to various camps in Germany. After the war he settled in the U.S. Pp. 129-176 contain an essay by Zeev Sternhell, "La guerre aux Lumières et aux Juifs", discussing French antisemitism in the light of the fate of the Michlin family. Emphasizes French indifference, especially in elite and Church circles, to Vichy's anti-Jewish measures. Petain's national revolution was the outcome of a long tradition of particularism and anti-rationalism in France. Concludes that the fate of the Jews is connected to the fate of the universalist, humanistic values of the Enlightenment, the Shoah being the most extreme form of war against them.
