Summary:
In 1715, concern was already being expressed about excessive sedimentation of the canals of Venice. As part of a series disseminating the results generated by UNESCO's Man in the Biosphere (MAB) Program, this volume showcases the unique Venice Lagoon ecosystem made newsworthy by the flooding of Venice in 1966. In followup to a 1983 UNESCO report entitled International Research Project Venice Lagoon, the current effort synthesizes information from the subsequent Venice Lagoon Ecosystem project and workshops held in the 1990s. The 29 papers branch into sections on: an overview of the project's history and goals, pelagic studies, benthic studies, biological effects of environmental pollution, and mathematical modeling. Lasserre is with UNESCO in Paris; Marzollo is at the U. degli Studi di Udine, Italy. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
