Summary:
Between 1812 and 1824, Raphaelle Peale painted still lifes--depicting berries, meats, other fruits, and vegetables--that Nemerov describes as uncanny because they suggest the artist's own body. Nemerov moves persuasively between these small but powerful paintings and the context of Peale's own life and of early-nineteenth-century Philadelphia.
