Summary:

Over the 20th Century, medicine has been radically transformed and powerfully transformative. In 1900 Western medicine was important to philanthropy and public health but it was marginal to the state the industrial economy and the welfare of most individuals. It is now central to all these aspects of life. Our prospects seem increasingly dependent on the progress of bio-medical sciences and genetic technologies, which promise to reshape future generations.

The editors of Medicine in the Twentieth Century have commissioned over forty authoritative and thoughtful essays, written by historical specialists but intended for general audiences. Some concentrate on the political economy of medicine and health as it changed from period to period and varied between countries. Others focus on understandings of the body - on the various 'bodies' of medical knowledge developed over the century in relation to reproduction, ethics, disability, psychiatry, experimentation, genetics, and much more. A third set of essays explores transformations in some of the theatres of medicine and the changing experiences of different categories of practitioners and patients - among them nurses, midwives, paramedics, children, the elderly, and the insane. The coverage is chiefly Western, but with an eye to indigenous, colonial and post-colonial systems.

The books varied and exciting chapters engage with crucial analytical themes expertise and authority, popular understandings and patients' politics, government and industry; gender, race and class; internationalism and global health. Throughout, the authors set the 'miracles' into contexts - the hype into history, the high-tech into the lingering realities of birth, copulation and death. The essays will appeal to health workers, historians, and a range of social scientists, but also to the citizen-patient in all of us.
