Summary:
The first edition of Modern Canadian Plays, measuring the breadth, depth and excitement of Canadian theatre in English from 1967 to the present, was first introduced by Talonbooks in 1985. This, the fourth edition of that classic text has now been expanded to a two volume edition of twenty-four plays. It continues to be an invaluable reference tool for theatre professionals, students and teachers. It has also become the primary textbook in Canadian theatre and literature courses throughout the world.
All of the authors and plays in these two volumes are contextualized with up-to-date bibliographies of critical commentary and reviews, and are extensively introduced by Jerry Wasserman -- professor at the University of British Columbia, theatre critic for the CBC, and one of Vancouver's most recurring (and memorable) faces on television. In the second volume Wasserman shows us Canadian drama from 1985 to 1997, during which we see women playwrights rise to greater prominence, along with Native, gay, lesbian, and Quebecois playwrights. But, continuing on from Volume I, this selection of plays not only takes us farther into the annals of the lives of the marginalized; it also provides a revealing cultural and philosophical cross-section of late-twentieth-century life in Canada.
