Summary:
Chinese Sociologics presents a strikingly original analysis of Chinese culture and society alongside a powerful critique of contemporary social theory. The book explores the various dimensions of social and individual life in China, including the complex fields of gender and desire. Chinese Sociologics argues that Chinese culture is a 'socio-logical' system in the sense that its institutional and ideological elements are best comprehended with reference to social life considered as a whole. Here the 'practical logic' which links Chinese individuals, families, communities and the state is explored in a wide range of contexts -- but especially in ritual and myth.
