Summary:
Boer War Project is one officer's remarkable account of battle -- comprised of letters, diaries, signals, and more than 1,000 fascinating photographs. Lieutenant Malcolm Riall served as a signals officer with the West Yorkshire Regiment throughout the Boer War. After a cadetship at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, Riall left England in 1899 for active service in South Africa with the assurance that everything would be over by Christmas. Little did he know the action and adventures that lay ahead of him.
Illuminated by hundreds of personal photographs, Riall's account embraces the entire three years of a conflict often regarded as one of the last gentleman's wars. Through the eyes of Lieutenant Riall, we experience the long marches, the hunger, and the severe weather. We also see the pastimes such as polo, cricket, football, and bird-watching interspersed among the battles and of catching a glimpse of an ambushed train carrying the Morning Post's most celebrated reporter, Winston Churchill, and of the weary West Yorkshires nursing blistered feet after a fourteen-mile march on Welverdiend, southwest of Pretoria.
