- Summary:
- War Zones is published in connection with an exhibition of contemporary photo- and media-based art works concerned with war and representation. Informed by the global realm of media information related to armed conflict, these works represent a range of perspectives, from those who have experienced war firsthand to those responding to media depictions and expressing their own histories and political attitudes. Among the artists included are Barbara Alper, Eugenio Dittborn, Willie Doherty, Jochen Gerz, Mona Hatoum, Alfredo Jaar, John & Yoko, Nam June Paik, Edward Poitras, Barbara Steinman, and Martha Rosler. With four essays and an introductory text exploring the relationships between art, media, and war, this exhibition catalogue provides a critical context for reflecting on what French theorist Paul Virilio has called the "merciless" century.
