- Summary:
- The work of Kristian Gullichsen belongs to the tradition of modern Finnish architecture. His design work over the past 30 years is symptomatic of a long evolution that begins with the extraordinary experience of Alvar Aalto, in whose studio he trained as a youth. In 1973, with Eikki Kaimaro and Timo Vormala, he founded Arkkitehdit KY, which immediately became one of the most interesting expressions of the new Finnish architecture, distinguishing itself for its experimentation with multiple prefabricated systems in reinforced concrete and wood, applied in thc design of collective residences and large industrial complexes.
- This monograph represents a definitive interpretation of the work of the Finnish architect and his office: a selection of thirty of the most important works realized by Gullichsen since 1968 traces a designing evolution that ranges from thc project for cml and parochial centers (Pieksmaki) to private and collective dwellings (Kangasala, Helsinki, Espoo), from industrial plans to commercial buildings (expansion of the Stockmann department stores, Helsinki). This series of works, built primarily in Finland, is completed by recent projects in Europe, testifying to the Gullichsen's international success, such as the Finnish Embassy at Stockholm and the new Modern Art Museum in Valencia.
