Summary:
Eight exhibitions in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden of the White House, each selected by a museum in a different region of the country, have showcased American sculpture of the twentieth century. Originating museums include the Denver Art Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Heard Museum in Phoenix, The New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
In this volume, every piece is reproduced in full color, creating a remarkable overview of the subject. It includes artists working in many styles and coming from many ethnic backgrounds. The list of artists is a veritable roll call of American talent -- including such figures as Alexander Calder, Louise Bourgeois, Georgia O'Keeffe, Elizabeth Catlett, Martin Puryear, Alan Houser, and David Smith, among many others.
David Finn, outstanding photographer and noted sculpture authority, photographed each exhibition. Finn describes his experiences photographing in the Garden, offering perceptive comments on such subjects as how a piece looks in different light and the way different works look in the same location.
Hillary Rodham Clinton contributes a Foreword about the inception of the idea of exhibiting twentieth-century sculpture in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, and comments on the reaction to the project by the public and the art community.
White House Curator Betty C. Monkman writes about the rich history of the Garden and its various incarnations under the supervision of each First Lady, illustrating her text with period photographs.
Brief biographical sketches of each artist and an index of works round out this delightful introduction to modern American sculpture. A privileged look at the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, this is an ideal book for art lovers and garden lovers alike.
