Actors and actresses play characters such as an embittered Medea, a lovesick Romeo, or a Hecabe moved to tears. The audience holds its breath, and the audience is hooked. But what about the actor? Is he affected by the emotions of the character he is playing? What goes on inside him? The shaping of emotions has been the subject of heated discussions for centuries. Diderot, in his Paradoxes of the Theatre Actor, proposed that the most brilliant actors should not feel any emotions. This is not unlike the distant acting style of Brecht's "epic theatre". But it is totally contrary to the empathetic "emotional reality" style of acting, of which the American "method acting school" is the best known exponent. Acting Emotions offers a clear survey of the various divergent views on acting.
