- Summary:
- A railroad engineer, who is subject to fits of madness, falls for an attractive married woman and becomes involved in circumstances he cannot control. Zola's haunting psychological drama of murder, revenge, conscience and the eternal triangle is transposed with ease into the 1930's by Renoir, who also preserves the train as an important setting, recurrant motif and "actor".
