- Summary:
- Marit Deyem lives alone on a 1,000-acre farm in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. She is bright and attractive, but she has trouble with the complexities of human relationships. Her one passion is the care of her wild animals: a lynx, a fox, some bears, and a family of wolves for whom she has established a sanctuary on her land.
- When the wolves bring Gabriel Frankman to her door, Marit feels an immediate connection to the thoughtful young teacher from the nearby school for the blind. Gabriel himself feels oddly calm in the presence of Marit and her wolves. But Marit's love for Gabriel soon brings forth a terrible tragedy to an innocent life, herself, and her precious animals.
