- Biography/History:
- Perhaps the most important American architect of the early 20th century, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, and studied engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for two terms. Self taught as an architect, Wright apprenticed with the Chicago architect Joseph Lynman Silsbee and then with the firm Adler and Sullivan. He established his independent office in Oak Park, Illinois in 1893-1911, and later in Madison, Wisconsin, 1911-1959, with temporary offices in Tokyo and Los Angeles. A prolific architect, Wright's designs had great influence in the development of modern architecture. Noted for their open plans, sensitive use of materials, and complex massing and form, Wright's works are revolutionary for their openness to and integration with nature.
