Summary:
On these pages is ample evidence of the warm humor and cultural insight that distinguished Gordo's run in America's newspapers for almost forty-four years. More by accident than by deliberate intention Gordo evolved into a cultural ambassador who represented life in Mexico to an American audience.
Surrounded by an ensemble of domestic animals who commented on the foibles of their master, Gordo (which means fat) was at first a simple bean farmer. As Arriola indulged his love for the folk art and lore of Mexico, his portly protagonist became a tour guide whose adventures acquainted readers north of the border with the life and customs of their neighbors to the south.
The biographical text, written by noted comics critic and historian Robert C. Harvey, traces Arriola's artistic growth. He became one of the comics' supreme stylists. His unusually inventive artwork on the Sunday pages produced stunning fiestas of color and design.
