- Born in England, Frederick Clark Withers worked in the London office of Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807-1880) before emigrating to the United States in late 1851 to work with Andrew Jackson Downing. Downing's death in 1852 led to his four year partnership with Calvert Vaux. Independently, Withers is known for his Jefferson Market Courthouse of 1874 and his design of Gallaudet College, in Washington, DC, 1867-1880. He was an important contributor to the Gothic Revival in the United States.
