- Summary:
- During the past few years, Celtic music and dance have taken North American culture by storm, becoming the soundtrack of the age. Riverdance, Braveheart, Lord of the Dance, Gael Force, Celtic Tides, and Needfire are just a few of the dance and film productions which have introduced traditional Celtic music to the new world. Aside from such notable male acts as The Chieftains, this music has been written and performed by women, either as solo artists or as band leaders. Their work has been compiled, somewhat anonymously, on such CDs as "A Woman's Heart" and "Women of the World: Celtic". But who are these women? What has inspired them to perform? What do they feel about traditional and contemporary Celtic culture?
- Celtic Women profiles the lives and careers of over twenty Celtic women artists, including Enya and her sister Maire Brennan, Mairiad Ni Mhaonaigh, Karen Matheson, Sharon Shannon, Loreena McKinnett, Mary Black, Natalie MacMaster, Mary Jane Lamond, Heather, Cookie, and Raylene Rankin, Rita Connolly, Mary Coughlan, Figgy Duff, Eileen Ivers, Talitha MacKenzie, Maura O'Connell, Maddy Prior, Delores Keane, Kathryn Tickell, and Mairead Sullivan, co-author of the book.
