Summary:
Directory of Congressional voting Scores and Interest Group Ratings, the country's most trusted reference on congressional voting patterns, is now completely updated and revised in a new third edition. Organized alphabetically by members' names, the Directory is perfect for quick or in-depth research and the easiest and most accurate way to gauge the political orientation of members of Congress.
The political positions and performance of members of Congress can be determined by examining each roll call vote a person casts -- usually in the hundreds -- during a career in office. The new edition of the Directory greatly simplifies this task for students, researchers, and citizens by drawing on compilations done by organized interest groups of differing political persuasions.
Editor J. Michael Sharp uses the voting scores of 10 prominent groups across the political spectrum, from organized labor to conservative action groups. The scores these groups give to senators and representatives -- reflecting the organizations' political agendas matched against actual roll call votes -- are a handy thumbnail portrait of the political posture of members. To this picture, Sharp adds voting scores from three often-cited studies done by Congressional Quarterly -- conservative coalition, party unity, and presidential support -- that add depth to understanding members' actions.
The third edition of this classic and useful reference presents a unique timeline (from 1947 to 1999) of scores compiled in one research volume. The second edition, published in 1996, ended with the 103rd Congress. The third edition extends the coverage through the two following Congresses in which the Republicans were in themajority in both chambers. It includes the pivotal 104th Congress that saw the first House GOP majority in four decades. These additions provide a vital record of members -- many of them new to Congress -- who were at the center of the battles between Republicans and President Clinton in the last half of the 1990s.
