Notes:
The "information" by Sir Edward Northey, attorney general, charges that the Duke had misappropriated a portion of the public funds allotted for the payment of foreign troops. Marlborough's reply states that such sums were a perquisite of the Commander-in chief of the armies, and were used to carry on necessary secret services.
