- Summary:
- Wars of Independence in Spanish America offers a lucid assessment of the heritage of the independence struggle. The volume examines the revolutions, civil wars, campaigns, guerrilla struggles, insurgencies, counterinsurgencies, guerrilla campaigns, and interventions. The approach is thematic rather than geographical and the introduction draws together comparative and contrasting themes. Selected from recent books and articles, the selections are complemented with pieces from earlier historians, contemporary travellers, foreign army officers, and key statements by participants from different backgrounds.
- Wars of Independence illustrates themes connected with the origins of the wars, the fifteen years or more of violence which differed according to region, and the political, economic and social contexts of the struggle. Finally, the book examines the product of the wars -- and illustrates the difficulties for the new nations.
