- Joseph Gay was a pseudonym used by both Alexander Pope and John Durant Breval, to whom the DNB (v. 2, p. 1197) attributes this pamphlet. Morgan (T218), Halkett & Laing (v. 1, p. 394), and W. Cushing (Initials and pseudonyms, 1st ser., p. 111) cite Pope as the probable author.
