Summary:
Jacob H. Janzen was born in 1878 in the Ukraine, and became an influential religious and intellectual leader among the Mennonite colonists there. After surviving terrible hardships in the years following World War I, he managed to emigrate to Canada in 1924 with his family.
Originally written and published in German, this book is part confession, part memoir, and part critique of the life Janzen experienced in the Mennonite colonies in the Russia of his day. Available now for the first time in English, his thoughtful reflections "lift the veil" on a unique period of Mennonite history.
