Summary:
Theraplay is a form of structured play therapy designed to strengthen the attachment between parents and their child. It is applicable to children of all ages, with a wide range of emotional, social, and behavioral problems, and is short term and cost effective. Modeled on the positive interactions that occur normally between parents and children, it is the treatment of choice for attachment difficulties, including those found in foster, adoptive, and autistic children. Dr. Evangeline Munns, a Theraplay therapist and trainer, introduces this treatment method in its traditional format of individual child and parent sessions. Its simple, action-oriented and visual activities are presented in an atmosphere of playfulness and fun, designed to easily engage both parent and child. Innovative work with siblings, families, multi-families, and groups within school and mental health settings are described in rich clinical detail by the contributing authors.
