Summary:
Survey of the architectural heritage of St. Petersburg, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as well as of the complex conservation problems, lack of resources, and neglect which imperil much of this heritage. Discusses the efforts of the Getty Conservation Institute in collaboration with the city and the Russian Academy of Science towards rescue and preservation in the creation of the St. Petersburg International Center for Preservation.
