Summary:
Czech author Daniela Fischerova has the rare ability to weave ordinary material into stories that are at once surprising, moving, and thought-provoking. She approaches such typical occurrences as a girl's school and summer friendships, a young woman's relationship with a married man, and a middle-aged woman's relationship with her entire family, as if no one has ever written about them before.
In Fischerova's stories, relationships are extremely fragile, often based on make-believe and a failure to truly communicate. Escape is everpresent and always futile.
But it is Fischerova's craftmanship and voice that set her stories apart, and make them the first fiction of her Czech baby boom generation to appear in English translation. She is always surprising: in the way she structures her stories, employs word, and combines ideas and emotions. And her stories turn on special, decisive moments that have a force similar to those of E. M. Forster's.
Stories, according to one narrator, are "fingers pointing somewhere else," but in these stories Daniela Fischerova manages to reach very close to home.
