- Isaac Jones Wistar was born in Philadelphia and educated at the Friends' Select School and Haverford College. He ran a dry goods store in Philadelphia, but in 1849 he travelled West with Dr. William Gambel as assistant curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences.

- Typescript copy, produced in Philadelphia in 1892, of Wistar's recollections of the events of his life. Includes a transcription of his diary of the 1849 journey from Independence to California and describes life at the mines and in California, trading with miners, hunting and trapping in the Northwest, his return East, and service in the Civil War.
