Summary:
Rather than presenting a history of ECOMOG's operations in Liberia, the initial years of the war are examined in order to offer an analysis of such an ambitious undertaking by members of the West African region. There are certainly many lessons to be drawn from this experience. There are certain commendable features of value to other future indigenous peacekeeping efforts despite the dubious results if ECOMOG's intervention is judged by its failure to bringing a halt to the carnage and dislocation. This book offers no unified evaluation, but approaches the respective topics individually. Future efforts by other analysts, however, will not be able to escape the question: Had ECOMOG never undertaken its operation, would the toll of human and material destruction have been less?
