Summary:
Relating Intimacies is a collection of papers which examine the form and content of a range of relationships including heterosexual, same sex, parental (and step-parental), kin and intergenerational associations. Drawing on work both by established writers and new voices in the area, it examines the processes in intimate relationships whereby latent power both becomes visible and may be resisted. The chapters in the first part of this volume consider the formation of intimate relationships - the ways in which they are constructed and reconstructed to accommodate changes in the life-course. The second part of the book examines the impact and influence of the state and legislation on intimacy. The remaining chapters are devoted to the manner in which power and resistance are made explicit in the everyday interactions of intimates. The book will contribute to contemporary debates on relationships, identity, citizenship, violence, moral panics and negotiations.
