Summary:
From Aristotle's Poetics to Brecht, Boal, and Hayel, controversy and polemics have characterized the debate about the nature and function of theatre. Daniel Gerould's landmark collection spotlights those influential theorists deeply involved in the theatre -- playwrights, directors, poets, and philosophers -- whose speculative positions continue to shape the future of the theatre.
Drama and performance are not considered in isolation one from the other, nor is western theatre separated from Asian and African. In the ongoing dialogue and interchange of ideas, actors and directors like Craig and Meyerhold hold their own with philosophers and poets such as Nietzsche and Soyinka and Yeats.
Shorter essays are given in their entirety, while excerpts from longer works appear in coherent, consecutive sections rather than in highly edited snippets.
