- Summary:
- After being unjustly accused of anti-Bolshevik conspiracy, Nikolay Gumilyov (1886-1921) was shot, and his poems were banned, going unpublished in Russia until 1986. Since then, more than 40 editions of his selected poems have sold out in Russia. The Pillar of Fire: Selected Poems is the first selected to appear in English since Burton Raffel's translations of 1972, courtesy of Richard McKane, the British translator of Akhmatova (to whom Gumilyov wa married) and of Mandelstam. Bristol University's Michael Basker introduces the book, which includes the poet's take on "Modernity": "The book makes me sad, the moon makes me pine./Perhaps I do not need a hero at all: /a schoolboy and schoolgirl, like Daphnis and Chloe, /walk down the alley and are strangely tender".
