- Summary:
- "Abandoning the Poor" argues that the British welfare state that developed for thirty years after World War II represented only a brief departure from a more ruthless form of social policy, characterized by the neglect and demonization of the poor, which has reemerged during the last two governments. Drawing comparisons with similar developments in Europe and the U.S., Chris Jones and Tony Novak discuss the major areas of British social policy in which this abandonment takes place. The book traces the creation and expansion of a "welfare" state that characterized the era of social democracy until the mid-70s, which was limited and conditional from the perspective of the poor. It examines the ideology and organization of the New Right, and explores the new terrain on which the struggle for the future of welfare and social policy must take place.
