- Summary:
- When Dionysus comes to Thebes, all but young Penthus feel his worship harmless. Infuriated, Dionysus hypnotizes Penthus and sends him among the revelers, where he is killed. Penthus's mother, in a Dionysian-induced frenzy, believes a lion has been killed and proudly carries its head home. Only when she recovers does she realize it is the severed head of her son.
