Summary:
To enter the world of Zapotec rugs is to be pitched into a universe of color and texture, tradition and artistry. The Zapotec weavers of Teotitlan del Valle, in Mexico's Oaxaca Valley region, are heirs to an ancient weaving tradition dating back to at least 900 B.C. when they wove textiles for Zapotec royalty at Monte Alban. Today they supply a thriving export business of international scope.
Author Andra Fischgrund Stanton has written a book for collectors and the general reader that traces the development of the Zapotec weaving tradition. At the heart of the book are the present-day weavers whose designs and techniques reach back to Zapotec prehistory and the use of natural dyes and ancient methods while at the same time reflect a changing world market. While each of the weavers has a different story to tell, all share a common devotion to family, community, and tradition. As their stories reveal, these weavers are in a continual struggle to keep traditions alive in the midst of constant change, clue in large part to their own success.
Along with historical examples of Zapotec textiles, Zapotec Weavers showcases fine examples of contemporary rugs and colorful documentary photographs of Zapotec lice and culture.
