Summary:
Nurtured by sharply contrasting legacies of China and Portugal, the city of Macau is likened here to the Roman deity Janus, who is usually depicted with two faces. This study of the ambivalent history of Macau reveals the historical reality of cultural vacillation between two political entities and the emergence of a creole minority, the Macanese. Includes contemporary bandw photos of religious and cultural sites. The author holds a PhD degree in comparative literature from the University of Hong Kong, and has written extensively on Macau and Hong Kong. Distributed by ISBS.
