In this new edition, the author has thoroughly revisited the text, adding new information about recent musical styles. The book begins with a study of African roots, and then shows how these musics were preserved and transformed on the North American continent, in the Caribbean, and in South and Central America. It then traces the flow of musical styles back from the New World to Africa. This is the only book to show the pervasive influence of African styles on a wide variety of musics, from traditional folk and blues to jazz to salsa, calypso, reggae, and rap.
