Summary:
This timely and clearly-defined book studies how the international community, working with local partners, can effectively prioritize and target resources on key breaking points in societies at risk of violent conflict. The text develops guidelines for assessing the causes of conflict in intrastate crises by utilizing early warning indicators, while presenting multidimensional strategies to transform them. The guidelines are illustrated in the cases of Burundi and Macedonia. Preventive action is seen as a means to contain conflicts and rehabilitate societies throughout the cycle of escalation, violence and post-conflict peacebuilding.
This book provides policymakers and practitioners, as well as scholars and students, a framework to recognize and effectively deal with the complexities of internal conflicts in order to avert violence and mass human suffering.
