Summary:
Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254-184 B.C.) was the most successful comic poet of the ancient world, and his work, as well as the tradition it represents, has influenced theatrical comedy for centuries. In Roman Laughter, the first book-length study devoted exclusively to Plautus, Professor Segal provides an acute analysis of the plays, placing the author in his social and historical context to discover why his comedies were so popular with the Roman people. For the new edition, Segal has written three new essays--on Amphitryon, Captivi, and Trinummus--and a new Preface.
