Penn Libraries copy imperfect: leaves 2D1-2G5 (De libris revolutionum Nicolai Copernici narratio prima) wanting, with modern ms. note in pencil on title leaf regarding this lack; leaves D2-D3 wanting, with 2 unnumbered leaves (signed "D ij" and "D iij", respectively) bound in their place supplying the missing text in print and diagrams in ms., "a curious set in which a printer's 'run-around' allows for the figure on f. 107 to be repeated on f. 107v, so they may be more than mere early facsimile replacements."--O. Gingerich, Annotated census of Copernicus' De revolutionibus, p. 346 (no. II.314). On these replacement leaves, leaf D2r, line 1 reads: "CXXXV. VI. Martij transacto, deficiente rursus à Septen-" and leaf D3r, line 1 reads: "rectangulum contentum sub a d e aequale est ei quod sub l d m".
Penn Libraries copy has laid in a bifolium comprising leaves D2-D3 from another copy of this edition. On these leaves, leaf D2r, line 1 reads: "CXXXV. VI. Martij transacto, deficiente rursus à Septentrione" and leaf D3r, line 1 reads: "ctangulum contentum sub a d e aequale est ei quod sub l d m con".
Penn Libraries copy "[c]ensored with now-faded ink including the names on f. 196v; an early hand has rewritten the text on ff. 3 and 10. Radices have been added to tables on ff. 70v etc., 81v etc., 101v etc. There are scattered [ms.] notes in book III, especially on ff. 74v, 77v and 95v (trimmed in binding), largely relating to radices. Folios 91 and 99 mention ellypsi, and on f. 142v, sed ellipsi, referring to the trajectory generated by the Copernican epicyclet."--O. Gingerich, Annotated census of Copernicus' De revolutionibus, p. 346 (no. II.314).
Purchased for the Penn Libraries in 1906.
Penn Libraries copy has 2 early (Italian?) ms. ownership inscriptions on title leaf, mutilated to illegibility leaving holes in leaf; ms. autograph ("Luigi Agresti[?]"), struck through, on title leaf.
Penn Libraries copy bound in full seventeenth-century Italian vellum (upper board damaged near spine); worn spine label with brief title ("N[i]colai Coper De Revolut Orb. Celestiu") stamped in gold; remains of labels at head and foot of spine, the latter with visible call number.
Penn Libraries copy has imprint year supplied in ms. in Arabic numerals in pencil at foot of title leaf; a few ms. marginal marks in pencil in text.
Penn Libraries copy has pinpoint wormhole in tail margin of leaves pi1-h4; wormhole in head outer corner of leaves A1-D1.
