Summary:
Rigidly defending our own theoretical turfs may be one way to cope with external impingements on clinical practice, but ultimately we all lose, clients included, if we don't consider advancements from other quarters that could inform and enhance our work. The time has come to assess what kinds of integrations make the best use of available resources, and Northcut and Heller propose a new vision based on applying cognitive-behavioral techniques in psychodynamic clinical practice. Their mission is to furnish a real understanding -- theoretical and applied -- of the strengths and limitations of both approaches, as well as a good feel for how to determine when to combine the two in treating couples, children, adolescents, older adults, even cases of abuse and chemical dependency.
