- Summary:
- Frantz Fanon: Critical Perspectives is a major re-assessment of the work of Frantz Fanon, a fearless critic of colonialism and a key figure in Algeria's struggle for independence. Since Fanon's untimely death in 1961, Fanon's intellectual reputation has grown on the strength of books such as Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth with their incisive insights into issues of race and colonialism.
- The contributors to this important volume address Fanon's extraordinary, often controversial writings, and examine the ways in which his work can shed light on contemporary issues in cultural politics. The articles are grouped into three sections: 'Re-Reading Fanon's Legacy' examines Fanon's commitment to the Algerian revolution and addresses debates over his gender and sexual politics. 'Fanon and/as Cultural Studies' questions how Fanon's work might both contribute to and remake contemporary cultural studies. Finally, in 'Fanon and the Future of Cultural Politics', contributors turn to the question of how Fanon's legacy could influence future political and intellectual thought, and what future cultural work that builds on Fanon's insights might look like.
- Embracing feminist theory, cultural studies, and postcolonialism, Frantz Fanon: Critical Perspectives represents the very real and sometimes contentious disagreements that mark the field of Fanon studies, and thus provides an essential resource for anyone interested in Fanon's work and its enduring legacy.
