Summary:

One of the first Hungarian historians to apply methods of the Annales school of French historiography, Fugedi (1916-92) here explores the life and customs of the medieval nobility, focusing on the Elefanthy kindred from what is now Slovakia. He compares the customary law for noble status, inheritance, and marriage as codified in 1415 and to documentary evidence, and finds that the legal literature differs in regard to social mobility and kindred solidarity.
