Biography/History:
George Mifflin Dallas was U.S. Minister to Russia from 1837 to 1839 and England from 1856 to 1861. He later served as Vice-President under President James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849.
Summary:
Three manuscript diaries; first volume, 1837-1855, comprises the years Dallas was Minister to Russia. Included is a letterbook that covers 1837 to 1839 and an address on personal observations on Russian economy and government (not dated). Second volume covers 1856, third volume 1857 to 1860, during the time Dallas was Minister to Great Britain.
