Summary:

The V&A's collection of Fatimid Art ranks alongside that of Cairo and is particularly strong in textiles, sculpture and ceramics. The woodwork is both early and important and the rock crystals are some of the museum's greatest treasures, rivalled only by those in Venice. The collection is little-known and the majority of the objects never have been published. This new book will therefore be an important contribution to the study of Islamic art, a rapidly growing field.

Following an introductory essay which puts the Fatimids in historical perspective and outlines current issues in the study of Fatimid art, the book focuses on some 60 key objects which are dealt with in four sections: ceramics; rock crystals and glass; woodwork; ivory. Each section contains an interpretative essay followed by a detailed discussion of the chosen pieces. All key objects are illustrated in color and a number of comparative photographs are also included. Many of these images will provide an essential reference for academics working in both Islamic and Medieval disciplines.
