The three speeches were delivered before the Scottish Parliament on 17 July 1705 ("Upon the succession"), 2 Nov. 1706 ("On the subject-matter of an union betwixt the two kingdoms of Scotland and England") and 15 Nov. 1706 ("On the second article of the Treaty").

The "Articles of the union," as set forth in the "Act ratifying and approving the Treaty of Union of the two kingdoms of Scotland and England" (p. 54-93), comprise the Articles agreed upon (22 July 1706) by the Commissioners Nominated to Treat of a Union between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, along with the Scottish amendments.

The "Act for securing the Protestant religion and Presbyterian church government," passed by the Scottish Parliament on 12 Nov. 1706, was to be "held and observed in all time coming as a fundamental and essential condition of any treaty or union to be concluded betwixt the two kingdoms."
