Summary:
Often it is made to appear that Jesus sets out with a fairly clear understanding of what he is to do, and maintains that basic understanding until his death. It seems to me, however, that the traditions preserved in the Gospel accounts reveal a man who in early manhood becomes aware that God has a special task for him to do and who then struggles to understand both what that task is and how it is to be carried out. In that process Jesus' own thinking appears to undergo modification and development. It is this development that these studies seek to trace. - from the Preface by the author.
