Summary:
The Middle Ages in Persia (the traditional name for modern Iran) are rather different from their European counterpart. In the vast continuum of Persian history 'Ancient Persia' ended in conquest by the Muslim Arabs in the seventh century AD; 'Modern Persia' took shape from the end of the eighteenth century when the impact of the west became pervasive. It is the intervening centuries that are the subject of this book. Of compelling interest in themselves, they have a further claim on the modern reader since, without an understanding of their legacy, no-one can hope to understand the complexities and dynamism of modern Iran.
